On Feb 5, 2006 APOD published a beautiful photo of a sun pillar as the
> western backdrop to Lake Tahoe. I live near Lake Tahoe, in

Hi Robin,
Welcome to the APOD forums. Yes this is the same phenomenon. Pillars occur from any light source as long as the orientation of the light source relative to the observer is correct and if the weather conditions are suitable.
