In going through the APOD's, You made a comment about the interstellar dust being "burned away" by the bright stars. This surely doesn't mean burned as in combined with oxygen. Exactly how is the dust eliminated?

You are correct that the dust does not "burn" like a fire on Earth, which is the rapid acquisition of oxygen. Mostly, the very energetic light of massive stars is powerful enough to break up the dust. - RJN
