Cryosphere today Antarctic Ice

Post by BMAONE23 » Wed Mar 10, 2010 10:26 pm

It looks like the Antarctic Sea Ice has begun building back as of 2-23 or 24. This seems like earlier than the usual March 15-17 date of minimum. Perhaps things really are beginning to cool again

Statistically, there's no way to determine that from a single year's observation. If anything can be taken from this, it's more likely that we're seeing the product of a decade with little or no overall increase in temperature. Models suggest that this flat period is likely to change soon, and that we'll see a new trend upwards at a higher rate than the average for the last 50 years. We'll see. In any case, many observational proxies, such as sea ice, lag the actual global temperature significantly. That's why global temperature values are calculated using a variety of inputs- land temperatures, sea temperatures, and atmospheric temperatures at different altitudes and latitudes.
