2012 New Moon

A Real new Moon

4 billion years, 4 billion centimeters. The Moon slows down the Earth's spin, The Earth slows down, the Moons speed. 2 miles of ice over New york. Is there another reason? You Know Where I am going with this. Four Billion Years and the Moon is still here. Can the Moon actually leave the Earth's Orbit? Or does it Slow right down, to the point, where it roles in to re-stabilize itself, getting real close to Earth and causing all Earth's Normals into chaos?

I would think all the maths would give us the answer. But would this not have been figured out already? I was wondering, because of the simple fact, I do not believe, 2 miles Deep, of ice over my home town, is caused by a slight bulge in the Earths orbit around the Sun.

Thanks for your input.

I think you have been reading to much fantasy and not enough science.
Fantasy is fun, but you have to remember, it's just fantasy.

Tidal forces continue to weaken such that they can't make the Moon actually leave the Earth's Orbit.

However, Hubble & dark energy expansion will eventually cause the Moon to leave the Earth's Orbit.

No, Just thinking to hard. The Moon is not heavy enough to leave the orbit of the Earth. Its not going fast enough. What happens next? If the Moon was going some place, It would of gone by now. 250,000 miles isn't that far. We are talking about 4.5 billion years. The Moon is slowing down the Earths spin(Fact) The Earth is slowing down the Moon (fact). And If we can measure that difference in a 100 years, Then I am pretty sure, All that chaos that the Moon is preventing will come back to haunt us. Do the Sums guys.

Every 25 thousand years, should be your answer.

Well, it certainly hurts to read what you wrote -- though not, I think, for the reasons you think.

Me too. I sprained something trying to figure out what the question actually was in this "Ask Questions about Astronomy" topic!

If not a new moon in 2012, we may possibly have a new "star" that year - or at least, Sarah Palin could just possibly become the President of the United States in 2012. If that happens, the likelyhood that the world will come to an end in 2012 may actually increase somewhat.

Maybe that was too facetious for this forum, and maybe we are not allowed to bring up politics at all at Starship Asterisk*. If so, I apologize and will refrain from doing it again.

That should answer any questions you have about what is and is not allowed on the board.
