As for contrails, I once saw a gray streak from horizon to horizon east west direction. The part I couldn’t understand was the jet was midway moving east like it was following the trail. I continued to observe the plane and gray streak for several minutes. The sun was about 40 degrees above the horizon in the south, around noon in the winter. I was in Kansas traveling home from snow skiing.
