public domain wide-field visible image

Post by ogapo » Thu Oct 04, 2012 5:41 pm

Does anyone know of a public domain (I'm assuming NASA or EU might have put something like this out) spherical view of the night sky in the visible spectrum? This would be something stitched to show a night sky as one might see it on a globe. Is there a technical term for this projection (or those "starglobes") that I might use for searching? I am working on a videogame project and I'd like to be able to use accurate constellations for my night sky. If I can't find an image, I'll probably try procedurally generating one from star data, but I figured I'd poke my head in and ask you nice folk here if anyone's got a link to one published maybe by one of the space agencies. Thanks in advance for any help!
