Located in the constellation of Sagittarius, the Lagoon Nebula may be one of the most widely observed objects in the nighttime sky. To the unaided eye it appears as a faint patch of cloud that is buried amongst a sea of stars. This emission nebula resides 5,800 light-years away from Earth, and is a very well known region of stellar birth. This area is 3 to 4 times more fruitful in massive star production than other regions.

Desert Draconids
by: Sean Parker Photography

The Draconids Meteor Shower was short lived in Tucson tonight as we only had about 70 minutes of clear skies to the north. Fortunately, I was still able to capture a few during my timelapse sequence! I picked out 5 frames that had meteors in them and composed them into a single image. I lit up the foreground using my headlamp for my final exposure to show some fall color that is beginning to show on cacti in the Sonoran Desert. The orange glow you see over the mountains is light pollution coming from PHX which is about 113 miles away.

Sharing is appreciated!

Full resolution

Recently I have teamed up with Michael van Doorn to make some imagery of M33. Michael uses a Celestron C11 with Hyperstar at f/2. This setup has a focal length of about 560mm and so does give a wide field with a high sensitivity.

We decided to combine the RGB and Ha from the Hyperstar with the resolution and detail of the TEC140 that I use.

The Triangulum Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light years (ly) from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. It is catalogued as Messier 33 or NGC 598, and is sometimes informally referred to as the Pinwheel Galaxy, a nickname it shares with Messier 101. The Triangulum Galaxy is the third-largest member of the Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy and about 30 other smaller galaxies. It is one of the most distant permanent objects that can be viewed with the naked eye.

In the end we had the following exposures:

TEC-140@f7/QSI-583ws: Luminance 74 x 300s
Hyperstar C11@f2/SXVR-H18 RGB: 30 x 60s (each) Ha: 60 x 200s
Total exposure time: 11h

Sky Sentinel Points to the Center of Our Galaxy
Copyright: Brian Ottum
http://www.astrobin.com/59428/ This is the view of our galaxy from one of the "last great sanctuaries of natural darkness," Bryce Canyon National Park. Taken down on the Navajo Trail, the stone spire called "The Sentinel" points almost exactly to the very center of the Milky Way. Shot June 10, 2013. Just two frames: one seven minute shot of the rocks, one seven minute shot of the sky (with the motor drive on). Combined in Photoshop. Canon 5D MarkIII (mod) with stock 24-105mm zoom @ 24mm. ISO 3200. Yep, it's DARK there!

Nice, John! Now you just need to do it at least two more times for a color image. ;) How does a few more weeks in the outback sound?
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.
