APOD: Orion above Easter Island (2017 Sep 18)

Post by APOD Robot » Mon Sep 18, 2017 4:11 am

Image Orion above Easter Island

Explanation: Why were the statues on Easter Island built? No one is sure. What is sure is that over 800 large stone statues exist there. The Easter Island statues, stand, on the average, over twice as tall as a person and have over 200 times as much mass. Few specifics are known about the history or meaning of the unusual rock sculptures, but many believe that they were created about 700 years ago in the images of local leaders of a lost civilization. Featured here, one of the ancient Moai sculptures was imaged in 2016 before the constellation of Orion, including the famous line of three belt stars and brilliant stars Betelgeuse (far left in red) and Rigel (upper center). The stone giant appears, however, to be inspecting the brightest star in the night sky (far right): Sirius.

If Betelgeuse had been a traffic light, I doubt we would have called it red!

Evocative image, though. The stone giant really seems to be contemplating Sirius, and the Universe itself.

Actually, that is just perspective... He is actually looking 90 degrees to our right...off screen at something else....

Is this photo flipped left to right? I expected the dog star on the other side. Rigel and Betelgeuse seem flipped as well. Or am I revealing my nothern hemisphere biases.

Can you post, or repost, an image of the Southern Cross with the same type of flavor as this one. And one of the south pole, where i would be if it had a star in the location ?

Photo: ESO/B Tafreshi.
I think the one at left looks pretty nice. Or maybe this one. Or this one, by ESO/B Tafreshi. The bright blue star at lower right is Acrux of the Southern Cross, and the large red nebula is of course the Carina Nebula.
Star trails around the South Celestial Pole. Photo: Ted Dobosz.

At right is a picture of star trails around the South Celestial Pole. Note the Magellanic Clouds. But there is no "Sirius" located close to the pole.

Here is a version of the top left image, overlaid with star trails. You can see where the South Celestial Pole is.

Look out! Supernova crash!

( A private little joke. I recently ran a yellow light, which was about to turn into red, and I was hit by a man who came from my right and was definitely running a red light.)
