Saturn Behind the Moon
Explanation: What's that next to the Moon?
Saturn. In its monthly trip around the
Earth -- and hence Earth's sky -- our Moon passed nearly in front of
Sun-orbiting Saturn earlier this week. Actually the
Moon passed
directly in front of
Saturn from the viewpoints of a wide swath of Earth's
Southern Hemisphere. The
featured image from
Sydney,
Australia captured the pair a few minutes before the
eclipse. The image was a single shot lasting only 1/500th of a second, later processed to better highlight both the
Moon and Saturn. Since
Saturn is nearly opposite the Sun, it can be seen nearly the entire night, starting at sunset, toward the south and east. The
gibbous Moon was also nearly opposite the Sun, and so also visible nearly the entire night -- it will be
full tomorrow night. The
Moon will occult Saturn again during every lap it makes around the Earth this year.

Super cool pic... but the Moon is upside down....
Great work. I love the colors of the dusty areas on the Moon... I don't see that in my photos, will have to check...

Does this mean that APOD supports occult practices?

Saw the near-full moon last night. It was beautiful but the Perseid Shower was interfering with my view. pass the ice cold one.

The near-full moon in today's APOD also interfered with the view of Saturn's moon Titan. No doubt the fast exposure required to avoid over exposing our Moon rendered Titan invisible in the photo, but it should have been easily visible in a good pair of binoculars.
P.S. And that wasn't a half bad joke Wolf.

It doesn't look like Titan was visible. Titan was occulted about 1 minute before the image was taken.

Interesting choice timing wise by the photographer then. One would think a photo of three objects would be of even more interest.

It would seem that way. Maybe Peter didn't notice or see Titan because of how bright the Moon was. It's possible he tried unsuccessfully to capture Titan (as you suspect would be the case anyway) so he decided the best image is with Saturn being closer to the Moon.
