ImageYoung Crescent Moon Setting by Tom Glenn, on Flickr

This image was taken from Mt. Laguna, CA, on July 21, 2020, at 20:42 PDT. This is a single exposure, taken with a Nikon D5600 and 70-200mm lens @ 200mm, f/2.8, ISO 100, 1/2s. The Moon is slightly over 1 day old, and 2.7% illuminated in this photograph, which was taken about 50 minutes after sunset, with the Moon at an altitude of 3.6 degrees above the local horizon. This photo was taken approximately one hour before my image of Comet NEOWISE, also from the same location (see link below).

Shark Attack - LDN 1235/1251
ldn_thumb.jpg
This image makes me think of a shark lurking under the water surface at a lonely swimmer in the water. The dark nebulae in this region are very impressive.

LDN 1235 (Lynds Dark Nebula) is a vast nebula complex that stretches throughout this image & bears some resemblance to a shark, thus commonly referred to as the "Dark Shark Nebula".

Dark nebula are opaque clouds of dust and gas in space that block the light of stars behind them. But some of the faint dust in the area of LDN 1235 may also be visible because the dust is glowing from photoluminescence. (This dust glows from the interstellar radiation field when the particles are hit by high energy radiation). LDN1235 was determined to be about 672 light years away from Earth.

Also shown in this image are two reflection nebulae, van den Bergh 149 (vdB 149) and vdB 150. These blue nebulae can be seen on the left side of the Dark Shark at top and bottom. Also visible (above & right of the bright white star) is distant galaxy PGC 67671.

Hortobágy
Copyright: György Soponyai

Last week I planned to capture the Perseid meteor shower at Hortobágy National Park, below one of the darkest Hungarian skies with the hope the double T-shaped sweep wells would act as a nice foreground of the scene. This kind of old wells are the symbol of the Hungarian plain, the Puszta.

However as this year I was able to capture only a small amount of Perseid-trails (out of the frame there were dozens) I decided not to add them to this photo. I think it's good enough without them.. :)
