An axle? In two parts?
Or is this a sample tube for later recovery?

Just boosting this, as no one seems to know, and I'd like to!

Yeah, just the standard sample recovery containers that Perseverance drop as it moves along.

When I first saw the (truncated) headline here, "Something has fallen off Perse", my immediate reaction was, "What? Something has fallen off Perseus? Has something fallen off the Perseus Cluster?

Something (NGC 1283?) has fallen off the Perseus Cluster!

Could it be that NGC 1283 has fallen off the Perseus Cluster? :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Another one! <iframe src="https://mars.nasa.gov/layout/embed/imag ... 17_04_0LLJ" width="500" height="500" scrolling="no" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Frustratingly, NASA doesn't discuss the multitude of images that Perseverance sends back. This one shows the sample tube embedded in the terrain, with the flanged end up. I had assumed that these tubes were test-tube analogues, that the rover filled with samples for recovery like a geologist might do, not drill them into the surface. Previous tubes, as above are left lying on the surface.

Landing a mission on Mars leaves a mark. It's not just the remains of the landing equipment that gets left behind on the surface.
