Heres a link which provides the invisible statistics counter for any website. Its free and gives good statistics such as browser type, OS, country, and so on....

I think having a counter on the site would be helpful in tracking whether or not any changes we make to the site have an impact on the amount of hits it receives. If we can see increased hits from something we have done (links, changing search parameters, etc), it could give us an indication of what can effectively increase the popularity of the page.
