The "layering" looks more like the way heat radiating off a dark building melts "fins" into a frozen pile of dirty snow (see it in our back yard every winter.)

What a wonderful photo!! Go Rosetta and Philae!

Lovely photo! We watched a lecture from Professor Carolin Crawford at Gresham this evening about star dust and the Iris Nebula was used as a beautiful example.

The remnant core is one of the interesting features in today's APOD. They would seem to be pretty unique objects but don't ever remember reading of them before. The Farmer's Almanac called the June full moon the "Strawberry Moon". I think I like Honey Moon better.

Thanks for the info that this image was taken from the northern hemisphere. Looks like we might finally get some clear nights in our area for telescoping.
