Does anyone else see two additional spots that look like they could also be impact locations? Immediately to the Northwest of the circle for Manicouagan is another smaller circular object and even further northwest is a much larger circular object with a circle in its center. Are these all known to...

Re: APOD: A Solar Filament Erupts (2024 May 26)

I'll only add that "the resulting explosion shot electrons and ions into the Solar System, some of which arrived at Earth three days later" means those electrons and ions were moving at about 1,300,000 mph! (That's 93,000,000 miles / 3 days / 24 hours.)

The Siberian Traps, I'm just saying!!! ... I think I've heard that this enormously prolonged series of volcanic eruptions had something to do with the breaking up of with the super-continent Pangea and/or with the Indian tectonic plate colliding with the Russian plate. So the Permian–Triass...

Re: APOD: Manicouagan Impact Crater from Space (2024 May 25)

Lots of interesting questions arise! How accurate are age estimates? The text says 215 million years, 1 million years plus or minus, so cannot have caused Triassic-Jurassic die-off at 201 million years. Percentage of error possible at that remove, for each estimate? Also, where was Quebec back then...

Re: APOD: M78 from the Euclid Space Telescope (2024 May 24)

The brightest foreground stars show six straight diffaction spikes and also at least two arcs. Are the arcs similarly an artefact of the way the telescope's mirror is mounted? You beat me to asking about the arcs. Clearly it's an optical artifact, but what causes it and why is it only visible on so...

So, I'm reading that tiny NGC 3165 is also part of this triple, and at about the same distance, yet it doesn't seem to be interacting with the other two at all, either currently or in the past. Why not? First, these interactions are tidal . That means they occur when extended bodies are close enoug...

The apparent disk of the Sun rotates by about 180° between sunrise and sunset (with respect to the horizon). Consider that when you're watching the Sun rise in the east, its north pole is pointing to the left. At sunset, it is pointing to the right. So a camera that is oriented so that its lower ed...
