Lynds Dark Nebula 1251
Explanation: Stars are forming in Lynds Dark Nebula (
LDN) 1251. About 1,000 light-years away and drifting above the plane of our Milky Way galaxy, the dusty molecular cloud is part of a complex of dark nebulae mapped toward the
Cepheus flare region.
Across the spectrum, astronomical explorations of the obscuring interstellar clouds reveal energetic shocks and outflows associated with newborn stars, including the telltale reddish glow from scattered
Herbig-Haro objects hiding in the image. Distant background galaxies also lurk on the scene, almost buried behind the dusty expanse.
This alluring view spans over two full moons on the sky, or 17 light-years at the estimated distance of LDN 1251.

Dark; but beautiful!
I think I saw three of the galaxies; one on
the left; one on the right; & one in the center! The one in the center
may be a star though as it is hard to decipher!

Ok, can someone point out a Herbig-Haro object for me? I can't seem to find any. At least none that look like (from
https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/awak ... born-stars):
...bright patches of nebulosity associated with newborn stars that form when narrow jets of partially ionized gas ejected by stars collide with nearby clouds of gas and dust.

I only see two indisputable galaxies (pointed to by red arrows):

I'm sure there are others that my eye is not discriminating enough to discern.

The ones indicated are in fact galaxies, then there are two in the upper left, somewhat small and one more to the right above, they are far away (double click on the image and it becomes larger), the one in the center looks like an HH object

The one I circled in my opinion is probably a galaxy: it is too large to be a star and be that dim! Again IMO!

I think that might be a tooth.

The cloud looks like a whale to me. See its flukes on the right?

I think you are right. Note that your proposed galaxy could be quite similar to the obvious galaxy to the right of it. The "candidate galaxy" has the same kind of bright stellar core as the galaxy on the right, and there are definite hints of a bulge or a disk which is more or less the same size as the bright inner disk of the other galaxy. There are also hints of spiral arms in the putative galaxy at left.
Note that the "possible galaxy" appears to be the same size as the the galaxy on its right. The distance between them also seems like a fairly typical distance between galaxies.

I concur; Those are the three I selected!
