Venus & M45
http://www.renren.com/spto

This huge bright thing is not moon. It is the planet Venus shining in the evening twilight. Some transparent clouds passing by served as a natural "soft focus filter", making Venus's halo even bigger. On Apr. 3, Venus had its nearest moment with the famous open cluster, the Pleiades. In Chinese, this is called "金星犯昴"(Jinxing Fan Mao, the Venus invades the Pleiades). It was believed to be a sign of coming war and drought in ancient China, as recorded in "Book of Jin".

This picture is photographed with a Canon EOS 550D DSLR behind a 80ED refractor telescope, with a total exposure time about 660 seconds, in ISO 400.

Venus & M45 at Xinglong Observatory
http://www.renren.com/spto

The Venus and her one-day lover M45 are shining in the evening twilight sky on an clear night of Xinglong Observatory at Hebei Province of China, which is the largest optical astronomy site in China. The strange shaped white structure at the right edge of the picture is part of the site's most treasured telescope, the LAMOST. It is the world's largest spectra survey telescope with a 6-meter diameter and 4000 fibers built in. After 3 years' test after built up in 2008, it has begun pioneer survey since last year. The red near skyline is due to both twilight and light pollution from Beijing(120km away).

Venus and the Pleiades near in the sky. There was a dense moon light as can be seen from our shadows at ground. My friend M.Raşid Tuğral and I, while shooting the moment.

The Venus-Pleiades conjunction was photographed on April 3, 2012 over a desert hillside. The silhouette of several saguaro cacti provides a pleasant backdrop to the setting of the pair on the Western horizon. The photo was taken with a Canon t2i and a 100 mm f/2.0 lens at f/3.5. (4 seconds @ ISO 800)

Here's a comparison of my photos from 2004 and 2012, poor quality, but shows how Venus has almost exactly return to the same position exactly 8 years later!

Brilliant Venus, which has just passed trough the "golden gate of the ecliptic", formed by the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters, is visible behind a blooming tree. The red giant star Betelgeuse can be seen above the tree, while the rest of the constellation Orion has already slipped beind it. Jupiter is also visible, very low at the horizont.
