The Earth is a planet, in a solar system, in a galaxy, in the universe. This point appears in several guises in the thread. Taking that point, my holiday snaps are relevent. Porn is part of the universe. A plain black screen - dark matter. You could argue that anything is relevent. It is also true ...

Moon Over Pigeon Point Lighthouse (APOD 26 Nov 2007)

Yet another wonderful picture with a very tenuous astronomical connection. Is APOD becoming a photographers gallery, or what?

I could put a picture of a coal face down a mine and claim it was once part of a nebula therefore astronomical.

Iridescent Cloud - astronomy connection? (APOD 25 Nov 2007)

Another fine picture but again, where is the astronomical connection. It is a weather picture here on Earth.

I just read through some of that Neal Adams stuff. It would be difficult to debunk. Not because he is right, there is just so much wrong, it would be hard to know where to start!

And, this is astronomical? You beat me to it! I was about to post a similar comment. Yet another Earth centric "picture", appears on Astronomy picture of the day! Not even a picture, a projection based on one guys theories. Theories I find questionable. He says the North and South Atlanti...

Don't see that it matters where it comes from. It is called Astronomy picture of the day, and several recent images have not been astronomical.

huh? Astronomy picture of the day. Like the rainbows the other day, (meteorology picture of the day?), the astronomical pedgree of the volcano picture, (geological picture of the day?), is somewhat lacking. There have been many A POD's which have little or nothing to do with astronomy is all I'm sa...

Tungurahua eruption.

Another fine picture but with a very thin astronomical link.

As an aside, I've walked on the slopes of that volcano, it is just outside Baños in Ecuador. Hot springs were the towns tourist mark.

This dark pixel is alone and not fuzzy like all the stars.
How could a single pixel appear fuzzy? A small dark object roughly located at around the centre of a pixel would surely appear exactly as that does.

I agree it is almost certainly a detector artifact by the way.

APOD 17th March 2006.

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap060317.html

It's easier if you click the picture to get the full size one, but Messier 51 is clearly visible as a fuzz on the shot, "above" and just "right" of Alkaid, (the furthest right star).

Something that struck me at once when I looked at that picture is the ring or circle of stars at the 7 o'clock position of the galaxy.

Rather then the galaxy being eaten, it may escape through a hole!

APOD 21/10 Ring Galaxy AM 0644-741 from Hubble

If you click on the picture to open the larger, uncropped version, in the top left of the field is a large background spiral. Look through the galaxy at about the 4 o'clock position, and you can see another ring like galaxy, or at least, it looks like one.
