Re: APOD: White Rock Fingers on Mars (2016 Feb 15)
I'm :?. The "featured picture" in the explanation brings up a coloured image in which the White Rock Fingers are seen, so it does not seem unreasonable to assume that the black & white image used for the APOD was produced from the coloured image. In the information with the coloured im...

Re: APOD: Yutu on a Little Planet (2016 Feb 13)
The interactive version is interesting. Clicking on the vertical line of 3 dots brings up a 'Projections and Nav Modes' feature in which there is a 'Little Planet View' and a 'Panini View'. I've not heard of a Panini View before but I did not readily see any obvious difference between the two so I w...

Re: APOD: Two Black Holes Merge (2016 Feb 12)
I was amused that the gravitational waves generated "cause the visible image to ripple and slosh". Slosh is not a word that I would have associated in astrophysics!. The 2 Black Holes in the image used as the APOD look like the eyes of an :owl: to me. As the gravitational waves are ...

Re: APOD: Advanced LIGO: Gravitational Wave... (2016 Feb 07)
David, I was confused about that as well, and as far as I can gather the detectors within each of the arms are currently 2km long while the arms themselves are each twice that length, thus capable of housing detectors twice as long. Thanks geckzilla for your response, which is appreciated :). That ...

Four-kilometer arms, not two! Yes, this error has been corrected on the main NASA APOD. The arms are four kilometers long. We apologize for the error. - RJN I would be grateful if someone could please clarify for me what is the length as I'm confused. In the explanation it states "Pictured her...

Re: APOD: Dwarf Planet Ceres (2016 Feb 04)
But Ceres is the first completely uninteresting object we've ever visited. I certainly wouldn't say that. A lack of unexpected physical features doesn't make it "uninteresting". If "Ceres is the first completely uninteresting object we've ever visited" then that makes it an inte...

The "eastern side" in the "Giant elliptical galaxy M60 and spiral galaxy NGC 4647...are found in a region of space where galaxies tend to gather, on the eastern side of the nearby Virgo Galaxy Cluster" made me :). The eastern side is presumably the more salubrious part for galaxi...

It's a gorgeous image. Where I am even on a clear night it can be hard to spot any more than the brightest of stars.
Thanks to Judy for the annotation . I must be getting good (award myself a smilie) as I managed to spot what I thought might be Andromeda before I saw the annotation!

It's a lovely image :). I've noticed that the caption with it in an English text section of Lorand's website is "Comet Catalina blasted through the Big Dipper, In Hungarian, it is called “Göncöl’s Wagon” after a taltos in the mythology". I've found in a Wikipedia entry that it states "...

Re: APOD: The Lagoon Nebula in Hydrogen, and... (2016 Jan 05)
Thanks all for your help with my query about why M8/NGC 6523 was named the Lagoon Nebula. The naming of nebulae is clearly a very fuzzy (or should I say very nebulous  ) area. As to the it "is named "Lagoon" for the band of dust seen to the right of the open cluster's center&quo...

Re: APOD: The Lagoon Nebula in Hydrogen, and... (2016 Jan 05)
How any nebula came to be so named can be very confusing and the Lagoon Nebula is (to me) no exception. In the explanation it states the nebula "is named "Lagoon" for the band of dust seen to the right of the open cluster's center". I assume the open cluster is the group of stars...

Re: APOD: Solstice Sun at Lulworth Cove (2015 Dec 31)
I'm confused as to the date when the sequence of the Sun's positions were taken. In the image's explanation in the Earth Science Picture of the Day website it states "Note that this sequence was captured on December 20, 2015 -- the date of the solstice was December 22 in Europe". However, ...
