Re: APOD: Falcon 9 First Stage Landing (2015 Dec 28)

Thanks Chris and neufer for your help. :)

Having read more of the many links I've now found this "Moving back at supersonic speeds that sent a sonic boom across Florida’s Space Coast, the first stage engines ignited to slow the booster down as it neared Landing Complex-1".

Re: APOD: Falcon 9 First Stage Landing (2015 Dec 28)

I'm not very good at understanding the physics of launchings/landings so please don't accuse me of being stupid as I don't understand why the engines are apparently being fired for a landing, as surely that would result in lifting! I'm sure it's not but it does look as if the video could be being sh...

In the explanation it states the image was "taken in 1996" but in the information in the related Hubble NewsCenter release (including its Fast Facts) it states the exposure was in September 1995 (the image was however released on June 10 1996). :?

What time of day and year was this taken? I wonder how often (during a year) the milky way appears to come straight up from the horizion (facing south?) as it does in this picture. Hi cindy4444. In the EXIF information that I was able to obtain it stated "Exposure: 77 sec, f/4, ISO 6400. Date:...

Re: APOD: Geminid Meteors over Xinglong... (2015 Dec 23)

It's an excellent scene. Though out of view on the left I suspect that there may have been just as much activity there. It would thus have been an even more wonderful sight. On trying some online translations of the Chinese text with the image I was amused by one that translated 3200 Phaethon as 320...

Thanks for your help and suggestion Chris. :)

Something that I've noticed for some time now is the large number of image and/or social network accounts that some people have (not just APOD contributors) that I wonder how they ever get time to really concentrate on what they are providing!

Re: APOD: Gravity's Grin (2015 Nov 27)

It's a fascinating image, in which there also seems to be a lot of galaxies. I wonder if there is a theoretical limit on the numbers of galaxies despite there being a lot of space in 'Space'? Assuming that there isn't an infinite amount of space, we can safely say there are a finite number of galax...

It's a terrific image, but did it need to be so large? To see it all in one view I had to reduced the screen size on my laptop (which has a good size screen) but that makes the text small. In information with the image in Ken's website it lists the exposure details, which add up to 17 hours. Will the individual exposure times be concurrently acquired, as if not then the 17 hours will mean at least some data must have been acquired in daylight (unless they were acquired over differing ...
